If your sled has a battery remove the cables and you will be fine. another tip is to keep your welding ground cable as close to the area you will be welding as possible. this will help protect your electrical and reduce arc blow, giving you a better & much stronger weld. if you will be using oxy/acet to weld, the only concern you have is heat..

I've welded the rails on many sleds... broken, stress cracked, worn grooves, ovaled holes.... and use either 4043 or 5356 filler rods. if you're butt welding the rails together use 4043. yes 5356 is stronger, but when welding 6061 the 4043 weld is still way stronger than the heat affected zone (haz) surrounding it..
